Principal’s Message

DCHS Students and Families,

As we gear up for the 2017-18 School Year, I wanted to update you on changes that students will experience when they return:

Our old FLEX program has been eliminated and replaced with an Advisory period that will take place between Periods 1 and 2. Advisory will be five days per week with program highlights such as Check and Connect, Ramp-Up lessons, Study time and time for Academic Interventions. The focus of Advisory will be to support students in many of the same ways as our old FLEX program, but to have a more defined, productive focus. More information will be provided by our Staff Advisory Team.

With Advisory being mid-morning, the schedule will change and lunches will start 1/2 hour later. Feedback from students over the years has been that eating at 10:30 a.m. makes one hungry by the end of the day... we heard you and couldn't agree more! We think this will be a great change to support our students. We also flipped our Friday Schedule (school started at 8:25 a.m.). We will now do our staff planning on Mondays with school starting at 8:25 a.m. Feedback from students and staff indicated this would be nice to try as Mondays are, well, Mondays... it's tougher to get going!

We had several staffing changes this summer and are looking forward to our students and families meeting the following: Tracy Nelson (Ag), Erica Seidenkranz (Science), Kayla Tessmer (English), Zachariah Carlson (Vocal Music), Matt Foss (Dean of Students) and Dale Carlson (Principal).

Yes, there will be a new Principal at DCHS for the first time in 10 years as I have taken the position of Superintendent at the Chisago Lakes Area Schools. I came to DC in 1994 and it will be strange to be someplace else. It has been an honor, a privilege and a blessing to have met and served so many great students, families and staff over the years. Dassel-Cokato is a special place and will also have a special place in my heart. Best wishes and I look forward to coming back from time to time and catching up with life-long friends.
